The secret to motivation

I’ve had a lot happening weight wise in the last couple of weeks. Now that I’m able to post again, here’s an update.

In my last post I had just had a 0.2kg gain. I was pretty upset about it and vowed to do better the next week.

On the tuesday, I went to an appointment at my gym to get my metabolism tested. It’s not cheap, it cost $150, and the idea is to find out exactly how many calories you should eat to maintain your weight. You sit on a couch and wear a mask for 15 minutes and it measure how much CO2 you breathe out (I think) and calculates the calories from that. I had been in earlier to meet with the Personal Trainer who administers the test, and he had tried to sell me a complete weight loss package, where they plan your food and exercise for you, but it was very expensive and also a) I can figure out my calories myself and b) I don’t want to change my exercise program right now as I have other goals than weight loss, like running the city to surf.

So, I had the test, and I was a little surprised to find out that my metabolism is slightly slow. The PT suggested that I eat only 1300 cals per day. I have been planning 1500 per day, and then eating my treats on top, so that’s a big difference. He also strongly suggested that you shouldn’t eat back your exercise calories. Now, calorieking says you should but hey, if you pay for the advice you should take it right?

So I cut back to the 1300 strainght away, and kept to it tuesday, wednesday thursday, went a bit over on friday, had a major failure on saturday involving an entire packet of water crackers, and went a bit over on sunday.

When I was working out on thursday the PT surprised me by coming over and commenting that my “weigh in day is on tuesday, right!” That’s when I realised, Oh my god, he’s going to keep track! Oh bugger. Now I’m like, actually accountable? This is not good. Especially with a weigh in after the weekend!

Anyway, tuesday rolled around and after my morning workout the PT called me over and weighed me in the office. I was really nervous after my sunday weigh in dissapointment but it turned out I had lost 0.9kg! I was really pleased. He also said he wanted to know my results every week, so now I really have to be good!

So this week I have been eating mostly according to my plan, with only a few bits of cheese extra in the evenings, and a couple of trail bars on the way home on the train cause I was really hungry.

So there you have it - the secret to motivation. Find a PT to weigh you in every week, and imagine having to explain to him why you haven’t been strong enough to stick to your diet this week!

Based on my weigh in this morning, and the fact that I haven’t been particularly bad today, I expect BIG things from my weigh in tomorrow!

Small win

I have just discovered that my posts back to August 2nd are still available in feedburner. I feel better that at least that much is not utterly lost. I’ve copied them to a word document and will work slowly at re-posting some of the most important ones.

Technical difficulties

I’m very sad to report that due to a problem with the free hosting service I was using, I have lost my database, with all my previous blog entries in it. Unfortunatly I had not yet learned to back up, so they’re very gone.

I’ve now signed up with hostgator and will start rebuilding the site from scratch, so keep checking back.
